#37 Rolling Stone- ahem- dictates its 500 GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME list, free of context from how that list was decided (i would pay cash money to hear two post-fifty boomers debate the relative merits of Lauren Hill's solo record vs. The Fugee's The Score, or the conversation that ended with Eminem landing on the list three times resulting in Frampton Comes Alive-- which you just KNOW is some RS staffer's favorite record-- ending up on the cutting room floor.). It gets really, really random towards the end-- someone on staff REALLY liked the Smashing Pumpkins-- and, maybe tellingly, the two most recent records in the top fifty are It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back and Nevermind. Then it's The Joshua Tree and Thriller and then you're pretty much trapped in an episode of WKRP, three punk choices and a smattering of token jazz selections aside. Come smell the bong resin.
