#28 Having exhaustively magpied the whole of Howard Chaykin's AMERICAN FLAGG!-- the real heart of CASANOVA, I think-- I've been looking around at other sources, digging for new inspirations and forgotten sounds.
If LUXURIA-- that's CASANOVA v1-- was the Sixties (free lust!), then GULA-- that's CASANOVA v2-- is the Seventies (indulgence!). So I've been looking at the cul-de-sac of COSMICALLY AWARE dayglo supercomics starting with Jim Starlin's body of work, namely WARLOCK and CAPTAIN MARVEL.
(I suspect these roads are leading to LUTHER ARKWRIGHT, which is neither Jim Starlin nor dayglo, but there it is.)
It's all superficial skimming at this point, just looking for visual fuel and vibes, trying to pick up this long-lost argot and grammar. Starlin was making album cover concept rock superhero comics, the Show Flier as Episodic Myth, HUNKY DORY as a graphic novel.
(That was '72, Warlock shows up in STRANGE TALES in '75, I think...)
Anyway, so, in STRANGE TALES #178, I came across the tier on the left. Beneath it is a tier from CASANOVA #4, where Cass' presence awakens the not-so-dormant Buddha Boy I'd not seen it before today and was greatly amused by the coincidence of the thing.
Anyway, make no mistake: finally the nerds had discovered acid...
