M.I.A. - KALA
// 21 Aug 07 // 10:11 AM // file under: jams #6

I wanted to write a nice long piece about M.I.A.'s brilliant new record KALA but the time keeps escaping me.

With its bassline ganked from "Blue Monday" and repurposed Pixies chorus, "$20" might be my favorite track on the disc. I've listened to it looped for a half-hour, waiting for the thrill to wear away and it refuses to go away. Every single time her voice kicks in, fat with droning atonal dread, I fall in love with the song all over again.

So, fuck what I have to say, listen to the track, then go buy the record, today, now. Once again, M.I.A. saves hip hop by destroying it. Thank god. Finally.
